White Awards Grants to Curb Pet Overpopulation with Proceeds
from Pet Friendly License Plates

SPRINGFIELD — Secretary of State Jesse White today awarded $1,000 grants to 50 organizations operating local spaying and neutering programs with funds generated by the sale of Illinois' special Pet Friendly license plates.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the special plates goes into a pet overpopulation fund to provide money for local spaying and neutering programs.

"Sadly, millions of cats and dogs are put to sleep in animal shelters each year because of overpopulation," said White. "There simply are not enough loving homes for all of these animals. Funds raised by our special Pet Friendly license plates go specifically to local animal shelters, humane societies and other organizations that spay and neuter cats and dogs to prevent overpopulation. I strongly encourage pet owners who have not had their animal spayed or neutered to do so. Motorists who would like to support these local programs can help this important effort by ordering Pet Friendly license plates."

White said drivers who currently have regular license plates and would like to change to "I Am Pet Friendly" plates would pay an initial fee of $118, instead of the $78 currently charged for plates. From the additional $40, $25 will go to the Spay/Neuter Fund and $15 will go to the Secretary of State special plate fund. Renewals each year thereafter would cost $105, with $25 going to the Spay/Neuter Fund and $2 to the Secretary of State special plate fund.
