Ex-Prisoner of War

Ex-Prisoner of War License Plates may be issued at no cost for the first set of plates to any U.S. citizen who is a present or former member of the U.S. Armed Forces who was a prisoner of war while serving in the U. S. Armed Forces or with any of its allies. The name of the ex-POW must appear as owner or co-owner on both the titles and registration application.

The widowed spouse of a former member of the U.S. Armed Forces may apply for the plates, providing that the widowed spouse: (1) was married to the ex-prisoner of war at the time the ex-prisoner of war died, and (2) is single at the time of application.

Random-Number Ex-Prisoner of War License Plates

  • Newly acquired vehicle/first-time issuance
    $95 - 1st set of plates ( $95 title fee + No registration fee)
    $194 - 2nd set of plates ($99 registration fee + $95 title fee)
  • Currently titled vehicle/first-time issuance
    No Fee - 1st set of plates
    $99 - 2nd set of plates
  • Current plates expire within 90 days
    $29 - 1st set of plates ($29 replacement fee)
    $128 - 2nd set of plates ($99 registration fee + $29 replacement fee)
  • Current plates do not expire within 90 days
    $29 - 1st set of plates ($29 replacement fee)
    $29 - 2nd set of plates ($29 replacement fee)
  • Annual renewal
    No Fee - 1st set of plates
    $99 - 2nd set of plates

(NOTE: to switch from a current random-numbered Ex-Prisoner of War license plates to a vanity/personalized Ex-Prisoner of War license plates will cost $29 replacement fee.)

To Apply

  • One must provide a form from the federal government or a letter from the Department of Veterans' Affairs verifying the ex-prisoner of war status.
  • Applicants who do not have this information may contact:

Availability

  • Ex-Prisoner of War license plates are multi-year and may be displayed on passenger vehicles, trucks and vans weighing 8,000 pounds or less and sport utility vehicles.
  • Not eligible for Circuit Breaker

Renewal Methods

  • The no fee Ex-Prisoner of War license plates must be renewed in Springfield. Apply in person or mail in the proper documentation to:

  • Only the second set of Ex-Prisoner of War license plates can be renewed online, by mail, touch-tone phone, or visit a Driver Services facility.
