Database of Illinois Civil War Veterans of Missouri Units

This database indexes names of 5,610 Illinois citizens appearing on the rosters of Missouri’s Federal Civil War units. Illinoisans occasionally joined military units raised in other states. In December 1863 the Missouri Adjutant General compiled rosters of Illinois men, extracting the names from his unit rolls. He then sent them to the Illinois Adjutant General. The rosters are a part of the Archives’ record series, Company Muster Rolls (RS 301.019).

Fred Delap of Kansas, Illinois created and donated this database to the Illinois State Archives. Delap, a volunteer with the Edgar County Genealogical Library, has also indexed the names of Illinois veterans of the War of 1812, Winnebago War, Black Hawk War, Mexican War and Spanish-American War.

Photocopies

The researcher can request a photocopy of a veteran’s entry in the muster rolls, originating from the record series, Company Muster Rolls (RS 301.019). For each soldier, the muster roll includes his name; rank; age; height; colors of eyes, hair and complexion; birthplace; marital status; occupation; date of enlistment; date and place of muster in; name of mustering officer; residence; and dated remarks on such matters as promotion, resignation, discharge, transfer, desertion, or death. As a result of limitations on staff research time, no more than two names can be searched per request. When making a request, please include your postal mailing address as well as the soldier’s name, unit and war of service.
