Chase Probate Case File
In 1839, Philander Chase, the first Episcopal
bishop of Illinois, founded Jubilee College, a theological seminary
to prepare clergymen for service in Illinois. Jubilee College is
located fifteen miles northwest of Peoria. Chase had moved his
family from Michigan to Illinois and built a home, which he called
"Robin's Nest Farm," at a timbered site fourteen miles
west of Peoria. Jubilee College was chartered to include a college
proper, a classical preparatory school for boys and a seminary for
girls. Jubilee College, which had never been a financial success,
closed in 1862, a decade after the death of its founder on September
20, 1852.
