Herrick House, originally chartered in 1921 as the Sunset Camp Service League, operated in Bartlett as a philanthropic vacation center for children. Renamed for Dr. James B. Herrick in 1950, Herrick House remained under private control until purchased by the Cook County Board of Commissioners in 1964. It was transferred by statute in 1969 to the jurisdiction of the Department of Children and Family Services to be maintained as a temporary care center for the purpose of receiving neglected or dependent children until completion of plans for their long-term or permanent placement in other child care facilities (P.A. 76-333, pp. 661-663).
Access to some of these records is restricted according to the provisions of P.A. 79-453 and the State Records Act of 1957 as amended.

Case files for children placed at Herrick House contain correspondence (primarily with officials of the Department of Children and Family Services), reports, interoffice memoranda, and other material relating to the care and handling of children while at Herrick House. Files frequently include intake sheets; behavior profiles; reports by caseworkers, psychologists, and probation officers; evaluations of child's social and academic progress; results of physical examinations; and medical history record.
Intake sheets include the child's name, sex, race, birth date, and religion; intake date; last address; name of guardian; names and addresses of agency social worker and supervisor; name of school attended; names and addresses of parents and other relatives; and other information on the child's family background.

File for each child contains a medical history record form filled out by a Herrick House physician. Medical history record outlines child's medical, developmental, and immunization history and includes the results of physical examinations made prior to and after admission to Herrick House. Frequently included in the files are copies of medical examinations submitted by private physicians, school districts, or other agencies; physicians' remarks on child's health; and reports of hospital emergency room treatment. Records are missing for children with surnames A-G.

Files are on children initially referred for Herrick House placement but subsequently placed in other institutions or housing. Each file includes correspondence from a Herrick House caseworker to a Department of Children and Family Services social worker acknowledging alternate arrangements for child's housing. Accompanying the correspondence is a Herrick House intake sheet which lists child's name, sex, race, birth date, and religion; intake date; last address; name of guardian; names and addresses of agency social worker and supervisor; name of school attended; names and addresses of parents and other relatives; and other information on the child's family background. Files also include information obtained from medical and psychological examinations and reports of investigations made by the juvenile court.

Daily record is of all changes in Herrick House population. For each child admitted to Herrick House listed are child's name, age, and birth date; Herrick House and child welfare identification numbers; date of admission and coded entries for type of admission; child's county of residence; marital status of parents; child's living arrangements; source of referral; grade placement prior to placement; relationship of guardian to child; category of guardian; and county of jurisdiction.
For each child discharged listed are the child's name, Herrick House identification number, and coded entries for date and type of separation, region discharged to, and planned living arrangements. For each child temporarily absent listed are child's name, Herrick House identification number, coded entries for date and type of temporary absence, and date and type of return from temporary absence. A movement table summarizes all changes in the population giving the total numbers of boys and girls admitted, discharged, resident, and absent for each day. Also included are copies of a procedural manual on statistical records.

Included are monthly statistical reports on intake referrals, admissions, discharges, casework, days in residence, and institutional capacity. For each child referred to Herrick House, entries include child's name, sex, race, and birth date; date application received; date child entered Herrick House or was rejected; residence prior to Herrick House admission; and the name and district office of referring social worker. For each child admitted entries include: child's name, sex, race, and birth date; admission and intake dates; and residence prior to Herrick House admission. Admission totals are broken down by sex, race, and district. For each child discharged entries include child's name, sex, race, and birth date; date of discharge; number of days in residence at Herrick House; and the name of institution or individual discharged to. Discharge totals are broken down by sex, race, and district.
Caseworkers' work sheets for each child handled include child's name; whether carried over from last month or new to Herrick House; breakdown of number of contacts with child, family, and others during month; whether child on active or inactive status at end of month; and totals for each category.
Reports on days in residence include each child's name, sex, and race; admission date; number of days in residence; and overall totals by sex and race. Capacity reports give daily numbers of boys and junior and senior girls in residence and total daily populations.
